A New Type Of Deck Slab For Bridges Using Honeycomb Sandwich Panels
ABSTRACT: Composite materials, in particular sandwich panels are increasingly used in construction due to their excellent performance characteristics and high strength/weight ratio. This article introduces the concept of a new type of structural slab that can be used for bridge decks. The system consists of a sandwich panel with two metal plates and a core formed of a honeycomb structure. This type of solution has several advantages compared to traditional solutions, which may be expected to be an alternative to traditional decks and concrete slabs. A comparison from the structural and financial point view is also presented between a traditional concrete slab and a honeycomb system. Finally a numerical study for the new solution is presented.
