A New Type Of Deck Slab For Bridges Using Honeycomb Sandwich Panels
Composite materials, in particular sandwich panels are increasingly used in construction due to their excellent performance characteristics and high strength/weight ratio. This article introduces the concept of a new type of structural slab that can be used for bridge decks. The system consists of a sandwich panel with two metal plates and a core formed of a honeycomb structure. This type of solution has several advantages compared to traditional solutions, which may be expected to be an alternative to traditional decks and concrete slabs. A comparison from the structural and financial point view is also presented between a traditional concrete slab and a honeycomb system. Finally a numerical study for the new solution is presented.
